The Importance of Nature in Education

Teacher Dan Bejan

In today’s rapidly advancing world, education systems are continuously evolving, seeking new and impactful ways to engage students. At Magnus School, we believe strongly in the power of integrating nature into our educational framework. It’s not just about stepping outside, but about immersing our students in environments that stimulate learning through all senses. This approach is particularly evident in our annual Magnus Express Camp, where education meets the great outdoors in a dynamic and enriching way.

Held in the picturesque settings of the Bellavista complex, nestled at 800 meters altitude with breathtaking mountain views, the Magnus Express Camp is designed to blend linguistic learning with the natural world. This camp is not only about academic learning; it’s about fostering a deep connection with the environment and using it as a catalyst for holistic development.

The camp offers a diverse program that spans languages such as English, Spanish, and German, integrating these with activities that encourage not only linguistic skills but also teamwork, cultural understanding, and personal growth. Each day is themed around a different language and culture, engaging students in a variety of tasks from treasure hunts to crafting, all designed to maximize interaction with both the language and the surroundings.

For instance, students participate in activities like ‘Guess the Taste’ and ‘Build Your Castle’, which are not only fun but are also imbued with educational value, reinforcing language skills and cultural awareness amidst nature’s classroom. These activities are carefully curated to ensure that while learning, students also appreciate and interact with the natural world, helping them understand the importance of sustainable living and environmental stewardship.

Physical activities are also a significant aspect of the camp, promoting health and physical well-being as integral parts of learning. This not only supports the physical development of students but also enhances their cognitive function, proving that a healthy body contributes to a healthy mind.

At Magnus School, all teachers share a common belief in the power of education in nature. We organize this camp because we understand that education extends beyond the four walls of a classroom. It’s about preparing our students to be global citizens who are not only knowledgeable but also environmentally conscious and culturally competent.

This initiative is a testament to our commitment to providing a balanced education that values academic achievement, physical health, and emotional well-being. We are proud to offer our students such opportunities where they can learn, grow, and thrive in the heart of nature, making learning an adventure that goes beyond books and into the realm of real-world experiences.
